I always stroke the steel rails with at least 1000 grade
wet-or-dry sandpaper before shooting ANY new pistol. The reason
for this is that milling cutters, being rotary teeth, always leave
tiny ridges as the material is moved between each tooth stroke.
These tiny "ridges", like teeth, are what must be worn away when
the gun is "broken in".
With a steel slide and a steel frame, each has a somewhat equal
chance
of surviving. With a steel slide and an much softer alloy
frame, the
frame can be eaten away by these tiny "teeth" long before
the steel
wears smooth. "Breakin" then becomes premature wear on
the alloy frame. Steel slide rails mated to an aluminum frame also
are buffer polished
to minimize this cause for frame wear.
I am convinced, by examination of pistols after thousands of rounds
of shooting, that wear is greatly minimized by polishing of the rails
before shooting any new pistol or any that I accurize for others.
I have examined hundreds of new pistols over the years and
rarely
do ANY mfrs ever smooth the rails like this unless it
comes through a
specialty or custom shop.
Incidentally, I also polish the cylinder stop on new revolvers
to
minimize the unsightly ring scraped around the cylinder by a
new
sharp edged stop.
