I offer three basic choices of finish for carbon Steel guns. They may be deblued and very
lightly sandblasted for a matte finish, then Nickel plated for protection against corrosion.
They can also be coated with a baked on black lacquer coating with Teflon or Molybdenum.
This does give some rust protection and is resistant to cleaning solvents, but it is not as
durable as electroplating and may cause slight dimensional changes.
The traditional finish is hot tank bluing in a 290° caustic salt bath. This probably gives
the least rust protection and requires the most care, but there is no gun finish more truly
beautiful than a highly polished hot tank blued gun. Firearms can also be blued with a matte
finish, which looks and feels and holds protective oil or grease like the traditional black
parkerized finish.
Nickel plate may also be done with a high polish mirror finish if desired, but this is relatively
more expensive because all of the flaws in the metal must be removed and the metal polished
to a mirror finish before electroplating. This takes much more shop labor time, and the cost
is much more.
